Devised from fragments of writer Nick Makoha’s ‘memory and imagination’, The Dark, directed by Roy Alexander Weise, dramatizes the journey of a mother attempting to smuggle her son out of Uganda on an overnight bus. Forced to flee their home country due to the civil and political unrest, persecution and war that characterised Idi Amin’s brutal dictatorship, the story centres around a range of characters on board the Matatu bus service heading for the border. Through innovative and interesting set, lighting and props, The Dark brings the small theatre space of the Ovalhouse to life; this two-person play focuses on the struggles of those who embark on epic migration journeys to escape the encroaching darkness and highlights the power of storytelling as a mode of survival. The play stars Michael Balogun and Akiya Henry.
